THE semi-final line-up for the Digicel Cup in Fiji has been decided after the last round robin match saw Digicel Lautoka fight hard for an 11-5 win over Digicel Nadi at Churchill Park on Wednesday night.

The win means the Maroons moved into the third spot ahead of Digicel Suva on the Digicel Cup points table.

This means Digicel Lautoka will meet Digicel Nadroga at Lawaqa Park in the semi-final on August 14, while Digicel Suva drops to fourth spot and will face table toppers Digicel Naitasiri in their semi-final at Ratu Cakobau Park on August 7.

The final will be played on August 21 at a venue yet to be decided.

Digicel Nadi opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a try from prop Bese Biunimasi, which Taniela Driu failed to convert.

Digicel Nadi took this lead into half-time until Digicel Lautoka hit back in the 50th minute. Bill Wilson scored for the side, which national fullback Jaoji Dakuvula failed to convert to leave scores at 5-5.

Lautoka sent in another Fiji rep, Taniela Rawaqa, and this paid dividends instantly.

Rawaqa kicked two penalties in the 66th and 79th minute to guide Lautoka home.

A LOT will be at stake for Digicel Lautoka, when it takes on neighbors Digicel Nadi in the last round robin match of the Digicel Cup at Churchill Park at 5pm (local time) tomorrow.

While Digicel Nadi is out of contention, a win for Digicel Lautoka will see the side finish third on the points table or even as high as second, if it gets a bonus point win with a clear margin of 63 points.

Currently, Digicel Lautoka is fourth on 34 points, while Digicel Naitasiri has assured itself a home semi-final by the virtue of having topped the points table.

The Highlanders are on 47 points followed by Digicel Nadroga, which is on 39 points. Digicel Suva is third on 37 points.

The semi-final venues will be decided after the Digicel Lautoka-Digicel Nadi match but it is for sure that one last four match will be played in the East and the other in the West.

Digicel Naitasiri could be hosting its semi-final in Nausori, while there is not yet a confirmation where Digicel Nadroga will host its semi-final match should it remain second.

The Board of the Fiji Rugby Union has denied the appeal by Northland Rugby Union against the FRU’s Games Committee ruling which disqualified Northland in the game against Naitasiri on 22nd May 2010 on account of fielding an unregistered player.

The Games Committee had found that the player, Josevata Bola, was at the time still officially registered with Naitasiri. The release that the Northland Rugby Union relied on was, in the board’s opinion, not done correctly

As a result Northland has forfeited the points from this game and Naitasiri is declared the winner.

LAUTOKA’s chances of a making the Digicel Cup semi-final looks firm after they upset title holders Nadroga 25-22 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka yesterday.

The Outriger on the Lagoon- sponsored Nadroga side played with 13 men in the last five minutes of the game after referee Mika Rokodrakia sent two Nadroga players off.

Winger Aporosa Tabulawaki was red carded for a dangerous tackle on Lautoka fullback Jaoji Dakuvula while flanker Semesa Gonevou was yellow carded for illegal play. Rokodrakia said Tabulawaki was sent off for punching.

Both teams scored three tries each but the deadly left boot of Flying Fijians fullback Dakuvula was the difference.

Former national 7s rep Iliesa Ratuva drew first blood for the home side with a try after some hard work from the forwards.

The try was not converted and Nadroga led 5-0.

Lautoka replied two minutes later after Nadroga allowed the ball to bounce from a high kick and managed to cross the tryline after a few phases.

Dakuvula converted to see Lautoka leading 7-5.

Nadroga hit back when 7s winger Joeli Lutumailagi showed brilliant footwork by evading three would-be tacklers before unloading to captain Paula Karatu, who dotted down for his team’s second try.

Nadroga scored their third try to Seveci Taka to see them comfortably in front, 18-7, at half-time.

Fans from both sides anticipated a Nadroga whitewash but the Sugar City boys had other ideas as they put up strongly in the second spell to completely shut out the Nadroga momentum.

Lautoka scored their second try within two minutes of the restart but Dakuvula failed to convert to see them trail Nadroga 12-18.

Dakuvula made amends for the missed conversion as he nailed a penalty minutes later to cut the deficit to 19-15.

Nadroga first five-eighth Meli Kurisaru increased Nadroga’s lead to 22-15 with a penalty but Lautoka knew victory was in sight with the subsequent sending off of the two players.

With two extra men Lautoka managed to score 10 points within a space of 10 minutes.,

Lautoka manager Ratu Jone Bouwalu was a jubilant man after the game.

“It is always an achievement for any team to beat Nadroga on home turf,” Ratu Jona said.

“Our defence was off in the first half but we told the boys during the half-time break to attack their inside backs and to try and suck in the big Nadroga forwards.”

Nadroga coach Esala Nauga said there were still many areas that needed to be fixed before they play Ovalau next week.
