Digicel provides innovative fundraising boost for provincial teams
Thursday, 25th March, 2010 Fiji: Digicel and the FRU today launched the third annual Digicel Cup provincial rugby tournament in the presence of all 12 competing captains at the Novotel in Lami ahead of this weekend’s Round 1 kick-off.
This will be Digicel’s third season as title partners to the Digicel Cup, which is now firmly established as the most competitive 15s provincial tournament in the country with a prize fund of $22,000, the eventual winners of the Digicel Cup walk away with $17,000 while the runner-up receives $5,000.
The 12 teams’ preparations received a welcome boost with the news that the direct funding to each team has been doubled to $25,000 as part Digicel’s overall sponsorship fee to the FRU.
Digicel has donated three handsets per Union, loaded with credit to kick-start the programme to aid closer communication between unions.
Matt Davey, CEO Digicel Fiji said, “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership of the Digicel Cup in what is year 1 of a four year extension as title sponsors. Our sponsorship of the Digicel Cup is an important part of our commitment to Fiji rugby.”
The first six games of the Digicel Cup kick off this weekend at 3pm at Suva, Lautoka, Nadi and Nausori. This weekend’s matches will be televised as will 13 other weekend matches over the season. Supporters at each of these matches will have the opportunity to participate in fun events throughout each afternoon including ‘Kick for Cash’ competitions and great entertainment from Digicel’s Gig Rig.
