DIGICEL has extended its sponsorship of the Fiji sevens rugby team for a further four years.

The new deal will see Digicel continue as the team’s major sponsor until 2013.

Fiji Rugby Union chairman Bill Gavoka said the four-year deal was historical.

“This renewed sponsorship is the largest in the history of FRU,” he said.

“Since Digicel began its sponsorship three years ago, Fiji rugby has developed on the international stage and as well as grassroots levels with the Digicel Cup.”

“This year’s Digicel Cup has been more exciting than ever and Digicel’s support for the tournament is a significant part of that,” Gavoka said.

Digicel Fiji chief executive John Delves made the announcement on Saturday at the opening event of the company’s new business lounge and commercial hub at Kadavu House in Suva.

“It is with great please that I can confirm Digicel has agreed to continued sponsorship of the Fiji sevens team for a further four years,” Delves said.

“Since Digicel began its sponsorship of Fiji rugby in 2005, we have been proudly watching the team go from strength to strength.

“This year was no exception with the Digicel Fiji sevens team’s wins at both the Hong Kong and Edinburgh tournament.

“We remain proud and excited about this sponsorship and look forward to many more triumphs in the coming years,” he said.

Present as well were national sevens team players and acting chief executive Keni Dakuidreketi.

Digicel is the major sponsor of Vanuatu national rugby and cricket teams as well as the Tongan national rugby teams.
