Digicel, proud sponsor of Fiji rugby, today announced their sponsorship of the 2009 IRB Pacific Nations Cup, hosted by Fiji.
The IRB Pacific Nations Cup is a 17-day festival of international Rugby spread across three match venues – the National Stadium (Suva), Churchill Park (Lautoka) and Lawaqa Park (Sigatoka), beginning on June 12th.
The tournament will see Fiji face teams from Samoa, Tonga, Japan, as well as 2006 and 2007 champions the Junior All Blacks.
“Digicel is very excited about its involvement with the 2009 Pacific Nations Cup,” said Digicel Fiji CEO John Delves, “particularly as it is being hosted here in Fiji. We are very proud of our association with the IRB and we are looking forward to some great rugby during this exceptional tournament.”
“Digicel’s sponsorship of the Pacific Nations Cup adds to our growing portfolio of rugby sponsorships in Fiji and the South Pacific which affords us a great opportunity to engage customers in shared passions,” continued Delves.
The two opening round matches will be played outside of Fiji with Samoa hosting the Junior All Blacks in Apia and Tonga entertaining the Fijians in Nuku’alofa the following day, before the tournament moves to Fiji.
Adding to the anticipation of the Pacific Nations Cup, the Fiji Warriors are through to the final of the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup which will be held in Samoa this Saturday. The IRB Pacific Rugby Cup is widely considered to be the lead-up tournament to the PNC. The tournaments combined form a clear competition pathway for the participating teams, who are also looking toward the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
Digicel’s sponsorship of Fiji’s national rugby tournament, the Digicel Cup, is currently on break ahead of the Pacific Nations Cup, and will recommence on Saturday July 4th with Round 8. The Digicel Cup final, held in August, promises to be very exciting again this year as last year’s winners Nadi fight to retain the Digicel Cup.
Also in Digicel rugby news, the Digicel Fiji 7s team have had an excellent run at the London 7s tournament putting in an amazing performance to win 26-15 against Kenya. The Digicel Fiji sevens will play the final leg of the sevens tournament this weekend in Edinburgh, Scotland.
